Locals shine in latest TSJ issue

The latest issue of The Surfer’s Journal (Spring ‘08, Volume 17, No. 2) features the work of two local surf artists–master shaper Michel Junod and veteran photographer Boots McGhee.

In a piece titled, “Journeyman: Michel Junod’s Quiet Surfing Career,” Christian Beamish pens the profile of Junod, who still shapes boards at his Almar Ave. factory and surfs whenever the waves are good. Beamish on Junod:

A master’s surfing stands out. You can spot them paddling, or the way they carry their board. “Master” is not an age category so much as a level of accomplishment, and Michel Junod is one in two disciplines: longboarding and surfboard shaping. On both the boards he makes and the waves he rides his lines are clean, pared down to the most efficient and pleasing expression. A surfer who has generally operated just outside the camera’s gaze, Junod is poised to become more widely known as he’ll be featured in Thomas Campbell’s upcoming surf film, The Present. For now though, please meet the quiet master.

Meanwhile, Boots has a spread–a rumored eight pages!–in collaboration with legendary surf travel pioneer and surf scribe Kevin Naughton focusing on a tricked out “Baja mobile.” The “Toro Rojo,” as the van is called, was designed and built by surfer Glen Horn who posts up for months at a time at Baja’s desert pointbreaks during the winter season.

I’m still waiting on my subscription to come in the mail. Can’t wait to see both articles. Grab a copy at your nearest surf shop and enjoy the stoke…

Very good Boots . Junod shaped the very best modern longboard that I’ve owned so far. Broken in half twice it now sits in two pieces never to be discarded by myself. I loved that board.. Boots.. Maybe some day before I pack it all up you’ll take my picture… Well, one out of two ain’t bad.
