Santa Cruz photographer Ryan Craig has been selected as a finalist for the Follow the Light Foundation Award. Craig was one of five photographers whose portfolio was chosen by the foundation from an international field.
The foundation was established in memory of longtime Surfing Magazine photo editor Larry “Flame” Moore to recognize and support the industry’s best up-and-coming surf photographers. The winner of the third annual award will receive a $5,000 grant dedicated to the art of surf photography.
“[Ryan] has a great usage of light. In particular, one of his photos from the Hook in Santa Cruz,” Surfing Magazine photo editor Peter Taras, one of this year’s judges, said in a statement. “He also probably has the strongest composition out of everyone.”
The winner will be announced Thursday during an awards banquet at the Surfing Heritage Foundation in San Clemente.

According to Eastside surfer Jim Lucas, a paddle-out and “wake” is planned for the 3-foot tiki statue near the Esplanade at Capitola Beach. On Thursday, the Capitola City Council voted to have the statue removed because it was installed without the city’s permission. The paddle-out, organized by a group of surfers known as “the usual suspects” who originally erected the statue, is scheduled for today at 8 a.m. Supporters of the statue will gather at 7:30 a.m.
“People are coming out of the woodwork,” Lucas said. “People are outraged that they are going to be taking it down, young kids through senior citizens.” Anyone wishing to show support for the statue is welcome to attend.
